Sum Trail
About Sum Trail
Sum Trail is a free number game of quick addition. Drag a trail through touching numbers on a 5×5 grid so they add up to the target. Longer trails score far more and add time to the clock, so the best players look for long paths instead of quick pairs.
How to play
- Press Start and drag through numbers that touch, including diagonally.
- Each number can be used once in a trail. Drag back to the last number to undo it.
- Let go when the trail adds up exactly to the target. The trail turns red if it goes over.
- Every number you clear adds 1 second to the clock. The run ends when time runs out.
Scoring
A trail scores its length squared, times 10. Two numbers earn 40 points, three earn 90, four earn 160 and six earn 360. One six-number trail earns 360 points, while the same six numbers cleared as three pairs earn only 120. The run starts with 90 seconds, and every cleared number adds a second whatever the trail length.
There is always an answer
Each target is made by adding up a real trail of 2 to 4 touching numbers on the board, so at least one answer always exists. There are usually several others too, often longer ones. After a trail is cleared, the numbers above it drop down and new numbers fall in from the top, and a new target appears.
Find long trails
Small numbers are the key to long trails. A target of 15 can be 9 and 6, but 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5 is a five-number trail worth 250 points. Look for clusters of small numbers and see if you can wind a path through them. The Trail counter in the top bar shows your running total as you drag.
Mental addition practice
Sum Trail is good practice for adding small numbers quickly and for spotting pairs that make 10. It suits students practising number bonds as well as adults who want a short brain game. Your best score is saved in this browser.
No penalty for a wrong trail
If you let go when the total does not match the target, the trail simply clears and the numbers stay where they were. You lose no points and no time, so it is worth trying a long trail even when you are not sure it adds up. Diagonal steps count, which lets a trail zigzag across the grid to collect small numbers. The line turns red the moment your total goes over the target.
