Number Forge

About Number Forge

Number Forge is a free math puzzle. You get a few number tiles and a target, and you combine tiles with addition, subtraction, multiplication and division until one of them equals the target. Twenty levels grow from three small numbers to five tiles and three-digit targets.

How to play

  1. Tap a number, tap an operation, then tap a second number.
  2. The two tiles are replaced by their result, which you can keep using.
  3. Results must be whole numbers above zero, so division has to divide exactly.
  4. Make a tile equal to the target to clear the level. You do not have to use every tile.

Levels

Levels 1 to 6 give you three tiles, levels 7 to 13 give you four and levels 14 to 20 give you five. From level 7, one tile is a big number: 10, 15, 20, 25 or 50. Targets are at least 5 on the first levels, at least 20 from level 4 and at least 50 from level 11, and never more than 999.

Every target can be made

Each level is built by combining its own tiles at random until one number is left, and that number becomes the target. So there is always at least one way to reach it using every tile. There are often shorter routes too, and any route that reaches the target counts.

Work backwards

Look at the target and ask how it could be made. A target of 147 is close to 150, which is 25 × 6, minus 3. A target of 77 could be 7 × 11, or 72 + 5. Multiplying the big number by a small one usually gets you near the target, and the other tiles fill the gap. Division is easy to forget, but it is useful for making small helper numbers, such as 6 ÷ 3 = 2.

Undo freely

Undo takes back one step at a time, and Reset restores the starting tiles. A failed idea costs nothing, so try a few routes. If you pick the wrong number first, tap it again to unselect it. On a keyboard, the +, -, * or x, and / keys pick an operation after you choose a number.
