Core Guard

About Core Guard

Core Guard is an arcade defence game. Spin a shield around your glowing core to block red shards flying in from every side. Green energy orbs heal the core, but only if you leave a gap and let them through.

How to play

  1. Move the mouse, drag your finger, or press the left and right arrow keys to turn the shield.
  2. Block red shards. Each one scores a point, and each one you miss costs a life.
  3. Let green orbs reach the core for five points and one life back.
  4. The run ends when you lose all three lives.

Shards and orbs

Red shards are the threat, and green orbs are the reward. A shard that gets past your shield costs a life. An orb that reaches the core is worth five points and restores a life, up to the maximum of three. If your shield blocks an orb, it simply vanishes and you get nothing, which makes every orb a small decision about where your shield should be.

How hard does it get?

Shards arrive slowly at first, about one a second, and they speed up throughout the run. The pace stops rising after a little over a minute, when objects appear almost three times as often and travel more than twice as fast. Each shard always spawns within reach of the one before it, so a quick player can defend every attack.

Read the colour of the core

The core shows your health at a glance. It glows blue at full health, turns yellow when you have two lives left, and turns orange on your last life. When it turns orange, stop chasing orbs for points and put all your attention on shards, unless an orb is arriving from a side you are not defending anyway.

Move early and take the short way

The shield turns quickly but not instantly, and it always takes the shortest way around. Look at the shards closest to the core, and move as soon as you know which one lands next. Pointing just ahead of the shard gives you more margin than waiting for it to arrive. A mouse or finger is the fastest control, because the shield chases your pointer directly.
