Sudoku Grove

About Sudoku Grove

Sudoku Grove is a free sudoku game with 20 levels and a new daily puzzle. Fill the 9×9 grid so every row, column and 3×3 box holds the digits 1 to 9. Every puzzle has exactly one solution, and pencil notes, undo and hints are there when you need them.

How to play

  1. Tap a square, then tap a number on the pad, or type it on your keyboard.
  2. Each row, each column and each 3×3 box must contain the digits 1 to 9 once.
  3. Turn on Notes to pencil in candidates. Digits that clash with another in the same row, column or box turn red.
  4. Fill every square correctly to clear the level.

How the levels get harder

Level 1 starts with 40 digits already filled in, and each level gives you fewer, down to about 25 on level 20. Fewer starting digits means longer chains of reasoning before each new digit is certain. Every puzzle is checked by a solver to make sure it has exactly one solution, so you never need to guess. The starting digits are placed in a mirrored pattern, so each grid looks balanced.

Start with singles

Pick a digit and look at one 3×3 box. If the same digit already sits in the rows and columns that cross the box, often only one square in the box is left for it. This is called a hidden single. Then check single squares: if eight different digits already appear in a square's row, column and box, the ninth must go there. These two ideas solve most of the easier levels on their own.

Use pencil notes

On harder levels, turn on Notes and write the possible digits into the trickiest squares. When you place a digit, Sudoku Grove clears that digit from the notes of every square in the same row, column and box, so your notes stay tidy. Look for two squares in a unit that share the same two candidates. Those two digits must go in those squares, so you can remove them from the rest of the unit.

Hints, undo and mistakes

A digit that clashes with another in the same row, column or box turns red at once. A digit can still be wrong without clashing yet, so if you get stuck, Hint fills the selected square with the right digit, or the first empty or wrong square if the selected one is already correct. Hints are counted in your result. Undo steps back one entry at a time, and a number on the pad greys out once all nine of that digit are placed.

The daily sudoku

Sudoku Grove is part of the daily puzzles. Each day brings one new grid, the same for every player, starting gently on Monday and getting harder toward Sunday. Your first solve of the day sets your time for sharing. On a keyboard, use the arrow keys to move, the number keys to fill, Backspace to erase and N to switch notes on or off.
