Pip Grid

About Pip Grid

Pip Grid is a card placement game. Twenty-five cards come one at a time, and you put each one on a 5×5 grid. When the grid is full, every row and every column scores as a five-card poker hand, so each card counts twice.

How to play

  1. The next card is shown in the bottom-right corner with a gold outline.
  2. Tap any empty space to place it. A placed card cannot be moved.
  3. Each of the five rows and five columns scores as a poker hand.
  4. The game ends when all 25 spaces are full. Line scores update as you play.

Hand values

A pair scores 2, two pair 5, three of a kind 10, a straight 15, a flush 20, a full house 25, four of a kind 50, a straight flush 75 and a royal flush 100. A line with no hand scores nothing. Pairs, three of a kind and four of a kind count as soon as they appear, while straights and flushes only count once all five cards are in the line.

Straights

A straight is five ranks in a row. Aces can be high, as in 10, J, Q, K, A, or low, as in A, 2, 3, 4, 5. A straight cannot wrap around, so Q, K, A, 2, 3 is not a straight. Straights are hard to finish, because one wrong card in the line ruins them.

Rows for suits, columns for ranks

A popular plan is to save rows for flushes and columns for matching ranks. Put cards of the same suit in the same row, and put cards of the same rank in the same column. A flush in a row is worth 20, and pairs and three of a kind build up in the columns at the same time. Every card belongs to one row and one column, so a good placement can feed two hands at once.

Keep a dump space

Some cards fit nowhere. Pick one row or column early on as a place for cards that do not help, and accept that it will score little. Spoiling one line on purpose keeps the other nine clean. Toward the end, count which suits and ranks are still useful, because only 25 of the 52 cards will ever appear.

Scores and best

The score in the top bar is the total of all ten lines and updates after every card. A total above 100 is a good game, and a single four of a kind or straight flush can push it much higher. Your best score is saved in this browser, and New game deals a fresh set of 25 cards.
